2018 Season Update – Half Blues and Broken Records

2018 has seen some great racing from the Light Blue. Top placings in our Varsities have earned many Cambridge riders Half Blues, with the possibility to add Full Blues as racing continues. In fact, Varsity 2018 was so successful that it has seen three club records fall, in addition to a national BUCS record!

New Club Records

BUCS 25 Men’s Team Record

The Cambridge Men’s A Team – John Mulvey, Felix Barker and Jack Brown – broke the BUCS 25 record this year with an aggregate time of 02:30:31 for three riders to complete the same 25 mile course during an event.

The same 02:30:31 time was sufficient to allow Mulvey, Barker and Brown to take the existing club record from a team including Michael Hutchinson, held since 1999!

Cambridge 10 Men’s Team Record

Mulvey, Barker and Brown were clearly in a destructive mood this April. Not content with breaking only the 25 record, the following week the trio all cleared the 20 minute mark in the local Cambridge CC 10, setting a combined time of 58:40 and taking the record set by John Mulvey, Seb Dickson and Hal Bradbury in 2017 by 28 seconds.

Cambridge 25 Women’s Team Record

Also at Varsity, Jess Atkinson, Imogen Grant and Carrie Bedingfield set an aggregate time of 03:00:33, faster than the club record of 03:07:40 held by Hayley Simmonds, Lucy Gossage and Anna Railton since 2013.

We’d like to thank all our sponsors, but particularly Hope Technology for providing us with Zipp wheels to race on and doubtless helping the team gain crucial seconds!

2018 Half Blues – Women

Jess Atkinson

Jess was first in the Varsity match and third overall at BUCS 25 this year, earning her her second Half Blue and a chance at a Full Blue later in the year.

Imogen Grant

Imogen was second woman from Cambridge at Varsity and earned a cycling Half Blue fresh from winning the women’s Boat Race.

Carrie Bedingfield

Carrie gained a Half Blue in her first year at Cambridge, also giving her the opportunity to upgrade to a Full Blue later in the year.

2018 Half Blues – Men

John Mulvey

John earned his third consecutive half blue this year, successfully defending his BUCS 25 and Varsity title to win the event overall. Both of John’s previous Half Blues have been converted to Full Blues following race results throughout the year.

Felix Barker

Felix returned to his degree after a year racing in Italy to place third in BUCS 25 and second Varsity rider, his second Half Blue and a chance to earn his first Full Blue.

Jack Brown

The only fresher to earn a Half Blue on the road this year, also with a chance of gaining a Full Blue in his first year at Cambridge.

Will Weatherill

The only mountain bike Half Blue on the list so far, Will is the first of our top three Varsity XC riders to gain a top 15 position in the Sport category of a National XC round. Will was 12th in Round 2 this Spring.
